WHO ARE MEG AND ESSER, ANYWAY?

While I am certainly no fan of graffiti, there is something about this otherwise nondescript side of a building. It is located in a rather unsavory part of town. Maybe it's the bars on the windows that give it away. I usually go exploring in my Yugo in pursuit of photos for this blog. Occasionally that endeavor involves the other side of the tracks. Neither rain, nor sleet, or the countless people that chased me, shall deter me from my chosen task. Perhaps next week, we will focus on murals in a better part of town. Enjoy your weekend.

STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND

This is certainly not your everyday, garden variety piece of yard art. A rather interesting piece. At times it looks Egyptian. At other times, it looks like it could be from many different periods. It is a very large work and must weigh a considerable amount. No one will be walking off with it in the middle of the night;that's for sure.

SIX PACK ABS

I've passed by this location hundreds of times and never saw this statue before. I don't think it magically appeared one day. I, also, find it hard to believe I overlooked him for so long. Well, Poseidon is here now. Athens can rest comfortably, he is taking the winter in warmer climes and will be returning in the Spring. Seems he was just heading out to get some ouzo. If he would just lose the trident he would look like any other tourist.

TEBOW DROPS BACK TO PASS

Of all the things I could say regarding this Alligator, the only one that seems most appropriate is, "He would make a heck of a mailbox."

TWO 'FER

Here is a double contribution to our ongoing series of unusual mailboxes. It's not often that I have seen two unusual mailboxes next to each other. In fact, it has never happened. Here is a jet ski trailer and a golf cart both in the vertical position. They are read both strange and definitely 'one of a kinds.' As such, they are perfect for this site. 'Nuff said!

BAR-B-Q

This will be our last installment in this series. A pig pointing south. Allow me to digress. There is a wonderful movie, THE LION IN WINTER, if you have never seen it, you must. In the movie, Eleanor of Aquitaine and King Henry II are arguing. Henry says something to the effect, "When pigs have wings," (or something like that). Eleanor retorts with, "Then there will be pork in the treetops come morning." That is what I think of when I look at this vain. A classic line, one heck of a pig!

EVER HEAR THE STORY OF THE TORTOISE AND THE HERON?

I make the assumption that this fine flying fellow is a Heron. Some have speculated he may be an Egret. He was flying a little too high and a little too fast to inquire. We do know he is headed East with beautiful flying conditions. Bon Voyage!

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR LEG, CAPTAIN?

Now this particular vane is more suited to New England rather than Ft. Lauderdale. We have very few whales here. We have never had a whaling industry, thankfully. My guess is the occupant of the house is a transplant. The mailbox listed Ahab on Pequod Lane as the owner. A total coincidence, don't you think?

TOWER, THIS IS PELICAN NINER..DO YOU COPY, OVER

It's hard to imagine why someone would have a Pelican on their wind vane. Maybe because their neighbors don't. They are interesting birds and very graceful in flight. However, just standing around figuring which way the wind is blowing, well, to each their own.

MEOW

This blog has the reputation of looking behind bushes and under rocks in order to bring you the things that make this city unique. Every city has them, we just seem to have more than most. At any rate, my back was bothering me from all that stooping. So I decided to look up for a change to try and get the kinks out. Low and behold, I discovered a whole new cache of material. There seems to be a panoply of things people adorn their roofs with. This week, I will be focusing on wind vanes. They some times go by other names but we won't elaborate. This home is probably not inhabited by a dog fancier. On the bright side, I didn't see any mice about. And there is no truth to the rumor it was modeled after Luna, Cezar and Leia's very talented feline. Although, I can't be sure.

CHOCOLATES MY PRETTY?

Here we have our Manatee decked out in his Valentine's Day finery. He has become a regular on this site. Hope you all have a "lovely" St. Valentine's Day wherever you may be. He certainly will.

MANY DIFFERENT FISH IN THE SEA

I'm not sure this qualifies as a mural or art. I'm always suspicious of so called art that I am capable of doing. I never knew what type of establishment this catered to until after I looked at this photo;not that there is any thing wrong with it. I do like the fish, although I have never seen any with such large eyes.

I'D HATE TO HAVE TO POLISH IT

ThiS interesting piece of art adorns the front of a Community College in the downtown area. It is titled "PEACE." The artist's name is Leonardo Neirman. I don't know anything more about the artist or his work. I do like it and find it to be very, Twenty-First Century.

U.F.O.

Here is another bird that showed up in my yard. I am not too swift when it comes to identifying our feathered friends. He looks like a giant Parakeet or some sort of small parrot. If any one knows what he is, let us know. I asked him and he kept requesting crackers.

WOODY THE WOODPECKER

This is a daily visitor to my backyard. His name (if you haven't guessed) is Woody. He shows up every morning for a peanut that I am eager to give him. He is quite tame and very beautiful. You would have been mistaken assuming all we had here is 'Snowbirds.' Woody also has a wife but she must have been otherwise preoccupied this morning.

FROM ITALY, WITH LOVE

This is a 1936 Lancia Astura Convertible. A very rare car, indeed. There were only 2484 Asturas produced between 1931 through 1936. They were considered technically advanced in their day. They were a favorite choice to appear in movies and a 'must have' of many celebrities. The Pope even had one. I don't know how many are still in existence, but my guess is not too many. It is truly lovely to behold in person.

RIDE 'EM

I am aware that some art can seem strange to those of us who aren't artists. The above work, for example, is a case in point. It is a boy sitting on a fish sitting on a serpent. Maybe this piece imitates life. I can say with certainty, I have never seen anything like this in my life. Boys in my neighborhood simply do not ride fish. I can safely say that our local fish do not ride serpents. I am pretty sure this piece is a poor copy of the original from somewhere in Europe. Rumor has it, their fish are more athletic than ours. Mystery solved!

BONEFISH GRILL

Any guesses where this piece of art was hanging? There is a prize to the person that guesses correctly. Fish Market? No! Sushi Restaurant? No! Bait and Tackle Shop? Wrong again! Give up? It was adorning the building housing a furniture store. It housed a motorcycle shop before the furniture store took over. Now that I can see.

WILMA!

I was driving by the nuclear power plant the other day and saw this creature walking about. For those of you who don't know, it is a Florida Lobster. It doesn't have claws like the boys from Maine but I would like to see them dunk a basketball. So next time you are down this way and see it on the menu, just order one:It should be plenty. You may want some extra butter, however.

IT APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE

Are you ready for some football? I know I am. I am about to come off the IR list just in time for the Super Bowl. The town is alive with fans and personalities. There are parties and limos just about everywhere you go. And all this just to welcome me back. I'm touched. Thank you all for your kind words and thoughtfulness during my time away.
