GO ASK ALICE
While taking a drive the other day, we passed through a little town called Boyne City. It sits on a very nice lake and seems to be a nice place to visit. I came across this mural while getting gas and it seemed to be rather unusual. I made some inquiries and discovered than Boyne City plays host to The National Morel Mushroom Festival which takes place about the middle of May. In addition to all the usual carnival things, there are prizes awarded to the largest, smallest, best dressed Morel mushroom and all kinds of other categories. There are seminars on foraging, cooking, identification, etc. While not as popular nor as valuable as it's relative , The Truffle, it is still a prized and tasty relative. So if you are in the area next May, leash up your pig and take to the woods;it's Morel season.

By the looks of that mural, I'd guess there maybe magic ones in the forest as well..Ha, I doubt it's the right climate though. I took a look at the video and wow, they really get into it! Can't help but wonder if someone ever gets a hold of the wrong kind?
ReplyDeleteInteresting post about this Morel mushroom, not very known in this latitude, they looks strange, I guess are splendid in a soup! Greetings from MC.
ReplyDeleteI think Alice ran away with the Mad Hatter. Anyway Alice doesn't live here anymore.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun festival. I worry about the best dressed. Are you going next May? MB
Morels are gorgeous. I love this poster - soft subtle colours and a beautiful design.
ReplyDeleteYour post made me think that I should have an Italian-style risotto with mushrooms again! Mushrooms are so delicious. Yummy!
ReplyDeleteNice mural and interesting story. I think here this mushroom is called morchella and has to be boiled to be edible.
ReplyDeleteI'll keep that in mind the next time my pig and I are travelling through Florida! LOL!
ReplyDeleteWho'd a thunk it? A mushroom festival! We've got mushrooms growing all over the yard but I hadn't thought about having a festival...hmm...let's see, I could charge...
ReplyDeleteWell, maybe not!
very clever title for today's mural and story. Very interesting info about the morel and the celebration of it.
ReplyDeleteA mushroom festival? I've never heard of that, but I guess any reason to celebrate is a good one!
ReplyDeleteNice mural! I wouldn't mind going to the mushroom festival, but I still would not feel confident enough to pick my own mushrooms and eat them.
ReplyDeleteI attended the June lavender festival on La Paix Farm in Alum Bridge this year. It was fabulous. Maybe next year, I can hit the morel mushroom festival in FL; head to the lavender festival in WV; and hit the Gilroy Garlic Festival in CA in July........... We would spend the year visiting these great events!!! How fun
ReplyDeleteHmmm, mushroom and truffle season is in the autumn over here! But I love les morilles ! Et les truffes !
ReplyDeleteI wish some murals around here would have been created with a similar talent. Great catch.
ReplyDeleteI love mushrooms and this sounds like a great festival. I've only had morels a couple of times and they are delicious. I've never had real truffles before.
ReplyDeletelove the muted colors in that piece.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your prayers and support re my recent illness and successful recovery. Much appreciated!
For me, it's mushrooms sauteed in butter!
ReplyDeleteThe mushrooms in the painting look like long-haired trolls ;o)
All the Best ~Maria
I guess the moral of the story is to be alert when getting gas, I mean filling up the car.
ReplyDeleteMorel mushrooms...Some cabbie gave me those and I wound up at Woodstock !!
ReplyDeleteOh, morels, the best of all 'shrooms. We go looking for them in burns, get lucky about 1 year in 3.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to learn more about mushrooms. Murals are a great way to showoff what a town or region has to offer.
ReplyDeleteWhat an utterly gorgeous picture!!! I'm glad I strolled down to see it--I had the good fortune of seeing that scene IN PERSON this spring, and of harvesting and eating those mushrooms--YUM--they were a bit sandy but delicious./
ReplyDeleteDitto on above comment - gorgeous picture. I thought the mushrooms were long haired nymphs - with their back to us.
