THEY CALL IT MELLOW YELLOW...

While cutting back some brush yesterday, I came across this rather beautiful specimen of fungi. While I'm no mycologist and couldn't tell the difference between a Death Cap and a baseball cap, I do have an eye for the unusual. This struck me as different, colorful, and photogenic. It certainly is something I have never seen before. It also raises a question, are all non-poisonous mushrooms edible? Curious minds want to know.

  1. Strange and interesting. As a fellow non-mycologist I share you opinion about this fungus. Hope somebody can shed some light about its nature...

  2. I like the color, did you eat just a little of it?

  3. Just because a mushroom is non-lethal does not mean it will taste good!

  4. Looks like a lemon peel. Did you nibble on it to see if it was poisonous or not. Are you still here???? Did you find out what it is? MB

  5. Looks like the top half of a grapefruit.

Don't let your enterprising mind talk you into tasting this!

  6. It looks a lot like one of the poisonous things on this site: http://www.naturallist.com/fungipoi.htm . This site also lists some edible mushrooms but mentions that some of them make people sick.

But, it is certainly different and it's a great photo! It stands out so vividly against the green leaves and brown twigs.

  7. I agree, it does look like a lemon! I have no knowledge at all so I can't help you.

  8. I have never seen one of those before either but will be looking for mushrooms when I walk in the forest this afternoon. Who knows? Maybe I'll find an unusual mushroom too! Neat find.

  9. Maybe it's a magic mushroom!
    God bless you!

  10. Perhaps a psychedelic mushroom? Saw your comment on Jim K's blog: is Brett crazy? Yup, he is, and I hope the Packers clean the Vikings clock this year. Spoken like a true Packer Backer, right?!

  11. Hi! I have seen (in the woods in Europe) a red-capped, white-spotted version of this that is called 'amanite tue-mouches' in French (a fly-killing amanite), and it is very poisonous. Imagine the yellow ones mean caution, too.

  12. It is very beautiful, but it is better to have on a photo that on a plate

  13. I've never seen one quite like that before! That's an unusual color.

  14. I am not a mycologist either, but it looks like amanita pantherina, related to the red one mentioned above, amanita muscaria. It is well known in the drug community, but not your normal magic "shroom" There are plenty of websites that discuss its origins, how to take it and so forth, but clearly it is powerful and can make you fatally weird.

  15. It looks like Fly agaric or fly amanita to me. A little makes you high and a lot kills you.

They call fly agaric or fly amanita because you can use it to kill flies!

However, I am not giving a final judgement, only a resemblance--with mushrooms, you need to be sure.

All nonpoisonus mushrooms are NOT edible. Some may not kill you, but may make you mildly ill--others may taste bad or be WOODY. Only eat the edible ones.
