GROUND CONTROL TO MAJOR TOM
I have always been fascinated by cemeteries. No, I am not obsessed with death or the dead. Rather, I find great beauty in the myriad of statues most cemeteries seem to have. The above example does not fit into that category. This, if you can believe it, sits atop someone's final resting place. A lover of aviation? Maybe. A modern metaphor? Why not!

I'd never have guessed that this is on a cemetery and I must say, at first I found it pretty bizarre too. But maybe it's a great way to commemorate someone. Put something up, they really loved or has something to do with their life, instead of a generic statue.
ReplyDeleteIncredible, wait no... actually the aircraft ID is a valid one for a 1974 Cessna 210L actually in Medford, NY.
ReplyDeleteFor sure, flying to Paradise! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's really different, isn't it?
Happy weekend dear friend,
Léia :)
I like that one, someone who loved life I am sure.
ReplyDeleteGreat to have a sense of humor and be able to show off one's love of flight!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking maybe it was a child's grave. An interesting choice for a headstone, for sure!
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday the 13th!!!
That is just way too neat. A little whimsey is needed in a cemetary. I like to roam around cemetaries too. I like the very old ones best.
ReplyDeleteI thought the clouds looked like that too. MB
A wonderful catch.
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing; never seen anything like it! But, hey, to each his own. "Off we go, into the wild blue yonder..."
ReplyDeleteA mystery .. now if we knew the deceased name we could Google it and learn about this tribute on the mausoleum
ReplyDeleteThat is a great shot! I once saw a tombstone in the shape of a surfboard.
ReplyDeleteAlas the authorities here wouldn't allow that kind of thing - such killjoys
ReplyDeleteVery cool. I want something funky like that on what ever they do with me when the time comes.
ReplyDeleteHow odd, but I'll 2nd what Daryl said - Get the name & google it!
ReplyDeleteI don't believe it. ;-)You just put your grandson's latest toy up there.
ReplyDeleteI've never been to a cemetery with such an interesting "sculpture". (Is it plastic?) Angels and urns...that's about all I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteWonderful post and great reference to D.B.
ReplyDeleteHere am I floating round my tin can, far above the moon
Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do.
I look forward to checking out your past posts which I missed while I was gone.
fondly, Lee
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it Superman? No - it's a headstone! B Squared, that is one awesome headstone statue. A rare find.
ReplyDeleteCheers.

ReplyDeleteI like cemeteries too. My parents did too.
Maybe he was a kid that never grew up; or a maker of kid's toys.
ReplyDeleteI've visited a lot of graveyards (researching genealogy) but have never seen anything like that! Interesting that the reg. number is a real plane, I hope he didn't "go down with the ship"...
