WHAT RECESSION?

So, here is what was opposite yesterday's post. The Oasis Of The Seas. She is the newest and largest cruise ship in the world. This photo was taken thru a fence with dogs nipping at my heals. Security is rather tight in the port these days, making closer shots difficult. She arrived four days ago from Finland. Her maiden voyage will be on December 5. She has a crew of 2,165, 16 decks, a carousel, an Aqua Theater, a mini golf course, 4 swimming pools, a park with 1200 plants and 56 trees to name but a few of the attractions. The photo below (taken by Amy Bennett) shows her arrival into port. If you click the above link, you will be directed to the official Oasis site with more photos and videos. In case you happen to be wondering what her price tag was, try $1.5 billion U.S. Even I can't think of anything to say after that.

  1. To me it is too much. I'm sure I wouldn't turn down a ticket and go for a ride, but yikes I hate to say this but I'd be a fish outa' water.

  2. That is one gigantic ship. It's a wonder that something so heavy can float.

  3. Wonderful post, I really wanted to see something of this ship, which probably will never come around here. It's a huge monster: I read they had some problems to clear the bridge in Denmark, which has a clearance of 65 meters.

  4. It must be good to go on a trip in a ship like that.

  5. My friends and I were just talking yesterday about how when we win the lottery, we are going to take a cruise on this ship! I love your perspective.

  6. Bill: I've been having trouble getting on to hour blog to post! I guess there is another ft. lauderdale daily photo.

Finally got here to your blog and am bowled over by the SIZE of that cruise ship. GRANDE for sure.
Thanks for all the comments on Greensboro Daily photo. I've got ya bookmarked now!

  7. Amazing. Never been on a cruise ship but a lifetime ago an aunt/uncle/2 cousins sailed to London on the Queen MARY .. we saw them off and I got to see the indoor swimming pool which left an enormous impression .. HUGE .. whale sized .. or so it seemed to my very young self.

  8. A philosopher I knew once said the problem with technology is that it gets out of hand. If we find a way to do something, we do it, damn the consequences.

Why is such a monstrosity needed? If you want to play golf, go play golf. If you want to walk in a park, go walk in a park. There are hundreds of thousands of unused swimming pools all over the country. Need a carousel? Come to Ocala. We have one at Silver Springs.

If you want to look at water, drive to a lake and/or the ocean.

Am I a crotchety old man? You betcha! At least sometimes. But can you imagine the "footprint" this thing leaves as it churns up the seas?

Have a great day, B Squared.

  9. Ay yi-yi!!! A person could get lost on that huge boat. Wandering for days---no months. It is amazing. MB

  10. Why do I feel nauseous?? I must be getting crotchety in my old age too cause I'm agreeing with Jacob again! :) If you're sailing on the beautiful ocean why do you need all that? If it's that boring then stay home! What ever happened to sitting on the deck in a nice chair and reading a book and enjoying the view? 1.5 billion ? but we nickel and dime over feeding the poor and providing a semblance of health care for our own!

And thanks for risking life and limb for the photo. You're a trooper B2!
BTW, I now have poison ivy on my leg from my tromp through the woods to photograph the gravesites Sat.!

  11. In defense of the cruising industry, this boat was ordered before the recession hit. They may have trouble filling it now, but the cruise line certainly didn't predict the troubles that lie ahead when they ordered this boat 3 years ago.

In any case, I enjoy cruising, but I agree this one is maybe a bit too much.

  12. Wow no wonder "Uncle Sam" looked worried! That is quite the behemoth.
I remember seeing a cruise ship, probably not that big, sail into a small port in the Caribbean, and thinking that it looked like a large city somehow placed on the water, looming above the island. Perhaps one day we will have actual floating cities out in the oceans; "Oasis of the Seas" can be one of the suburbs.

  13. I tend to agree with Jacob here, this does seem a little out of hand. I haven't been bitten by the cruising bug yet, but many of my friends have, so I think it's just a matter of time!

  14. Oops, sorry, I'll skip cruises. At least someone's making a living off this one...

  15. Does it belong to Finland or The US? That's a pretty penny!

  16. That was quite a limbo trick, getting this little vessel under the Great Belt Bridge in Denmark. You can watch the passage here. They had to make the chimneys removable for this one occasion, otherwise she would have been confined to the Baltic Sea for good.

  17. I see you noticed my little boat. I had them park it down there.

  18. I'm not one for taking cruises on big ships. But I guess there must be quite a few people who think this kind of vacationing is fun or this boat would not have been built.

  19. Wow, wow, wow. A paradise in the sea?

  20. Park with 56 trees, sounds crazy to me. This ship must be bigger than it even looks on the pictures. Pretty amazing.

  21. That is one big baby. I like the second photo with the tugs all spouting. I took one of the last voyages of Le France from Le Havre to NYC in 1973, and it was really something to see the Statue of Liberty rise on the horizon.

  22. Amazing shot! It looks like the Earth is being invaded by giant ships in a Godzilla way, or shall I say Shipzilla?! :-)

  23. What recession indeed?!?!?!

That said, I won't mind a short cruise on that ship. It might be fun!

  24. WOW! Super shot, kind of scary, really, but impressive!!!

    I'm sure not that rich.

  25. Wow! Double wow! I'm impressed that you put yourself at risk to bring us the story. I like to take a risk every now and then myself. The house being painted?

  26. I find that ship a little scary. Actually, to be homest, I find that ship horrifying as all hell.

  27. Incredible and huge ship, apparently there is no limit to the size of this kind of cruises, impressive!

  28. Wow! I'd have to say no thanks to getting on that ship. I imagine this time of year one could get the flu pretty easily on a cruise.

  29. «Louis» wonders what will happen to this top-heavy behemoth when it encounters a fierce storm at sea. The center of gravity on this ship has got to be very high, making it very unstable in a storm.
