WHERE EAGLES DARE

This strange looking plane is called a Long EZ. It was designed by Burt Rutan and is offered in kit form or straight plans. It is a little over 16 feet long, capable of staying in the air for 10 hours and travel over 1600 miles. No, it is not missing a front wheel. Before the pilot can get in the aircraft, he has to extend the nose landing gear. It is as bizarre looking in person as it is in the photo. An amazing piece of aeronautical engineering.

  1. What a strange little plane! Don't think I'd be brave enough to go up in it.

  5. Very interesting. I guess you just fly with the landing gear out permanently?

  11. No matter how many times I look closely, I can't figure out how this piece of machine could possibly fly! ;D

  12. Man and his flying machines..fascinating! Unfortunately this is also the plane that John Denver was flying near where I live when he crashed into the Pacific.

  13. I know something about planes and I know Burt Rutan, but I have never heard of this. It seems really something to see in flight...
    Great catch, as always!

  15. I wouldn't know much about them, but I believe innovations in planes are in the news this week. Hopefully easy on fuel, too, if it can stay aloft that long. It looks sleek.

  16. Do you or have you ever belonged to the Experimental Aircraft Association? They have (or used to, anyway) a week long convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin every year. LOTs of strange-looking aircraft there. :)
