TIMBER
The woodpeckers in Michigan are considerably larger than those we have in Florida. The above tree provides an example of the Michigan guys and girls handy work. We have seen many similar examples far and wide. Many a time, we will be taking a leisurely walk and hear, what seems to us to be, a jack-hammer at work. But in the woods? No! It's just Woody and many of his friends.

Very interesting post! I would love to see some birds in this tree!
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day there!

Larger woodpeckers or the scary Big... Tooth?
ReplyDeletewow! amazing!
ReplyDeleteA woodpecker made those holes?! Wow!
ReplyDeleteWow!!! Hope you'll catch us a nice pair of "Woodies"!
ReplyDeletewow, they must be huge!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! It looks like a freakin' monster took a couple of chunks out of that tree. That blows me away. Our woodpeckers here just make diminutive little holes in rows. It looks like yours used dynamite! Scary!
ReplyDeleteWere these the handiwork of piliated woodpeckers who usually travel in pairs? I got to see a couple while in Ontario last month and they truly were amazing to see. Do you think they were looking for bugs or making a condo?
ReplyDeleteDo you have the varigated variety or the plain red-headed ones?
ReplyDeleteAntjas-I saw a Piliated woodpecker on our deck. He was huge. Easily could have done the damage. As to making a condo, more like an entire housing development.
ReplyDeleteWow that is some serious woodpecking!
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing! I can hear them chattering on our trees in the back yard sometimes but they don't do this kind of damage! Yikes.
ReplyDeleteHalcyon-so far we have seen Red-Bellied, Hairy, and Pileated Woodpeckers. The Pileated can reach almost 20 inches in height and really do a lot of damage.
ReplyDeletePileateds hard at work. It's such a treat to see them (or even hear them). Nice capture.
ReplyDeleteWow!! They grow 'em big in them Michigan woods---just like the mosquitos. LOL MB
ReplyDeleteThe holes in that tree rival the holes in our neighbor's maple where raccoons have had a "maternity ward" for two years in a row now. The birds and the sounds they make must be impressive. Your post yesterday garnered many, many comments...well-deserved because of its uniqueness.
ReplyDeletegeesh! They must be huge
ReplyDeleteIt makes one wonder, why these guys don't get a brain damage after all that pecking. (; BTW, the tree had obviously some serious problems with insects before the woodpecker came. Believe it or not, wookpecker are very useful creatures. It's superstition that woodpeckers can kill trees. Those trees were dead already or condemned to die, e.g. because of woodworms.
ReplyDeleteNow that would be enough reason for a major Monday headache, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteGeez, those are super serious woodpeckers.
ReplyDeleteWow! They sure did a number on that tree. They must be woodpeckers on steroids.
ReplyDeleteHa..my, I should say so.. Someone should alert the environmentalists! I had posted one of wood bees in dead trees and I'm sure it's the same in that they were dead to begin with..I should ask a tree?
ReplyDeleteThey're super sizing it and building McMansions? Going on what Buenos Aires says, I suppose they're planning a spec house.
