THEY'RE HERE

This is the newest member of our family. His name is Michael Jackson;MJ for short. He showed up about the time of his namesake's demise. No bird-feeder is safe from MJ. He eats more than my wife. Once he finishes with his daily ration of nuts and the birds sunflower seeds, he stares in the window with that, "Don't you know winter's coming" look. He has dug up every plant on the deck, destroyed the peat pots before the seeds sprouted, and drives my dogs crazy. My only hope is that he joins a union and is forced to take weekends and holidays off. Any suggestions for relocation services or vacation destinations, would be greatly appreciated.

  2. As alternative, with this impressive résumé, is he interested in any elective position?

  3. His long-lost Scottish cousin visited my garden for a few years. The cat generally managed to ignore him but Dad went plum-crazy trying to outwit him by rigging up bird-feeders he couldn't sabotage. Needless to say it was homo sapiens nil, squirrel ALL.

  5. Too funny! You write so well. Haven't a solution but am surprised he's not scared of the dogs. Get a cat!

  6. mj would be welcomed at my house....I spoil the squirrels in my yard rotten. and yes, they will come to the back door and stare if the feeding station out back empties out completely. unfortunately I wasn't on top of my game last week and the little buggers climbed up the sunflowers growing near the feeders and brought them down!

  7. Oh too funny. Of course you know if he joined a union you would be forced to just pay--er--feed him more---the benefits you know. He's a rabble rouser I can just tell. No solution from me. I pay my dues. LOL MB

  8. He does look well fed! I have dozens of these little terrorists in my backyard and I finally found a birdfeeder they can't raid. It's the "Eliminator" at Wild Birds Unlimited. I've had it for over a year and the only seeds they get from it are the ones the birds drop on the ground. I finally had to remove my back screen door because they wouldn't stop climbing up it trying to get to the feeder. They were tearing the screen and peeing on the door. Ugh!

  9. When I lived in a garage apartment in college, the squirrels are so used to us feeding them that they would come to the screen door and scratch the netting, begging for food.

    Smart critters!

  10. I feel your pain!!!

I'm going to check on the Eliminator. I bought a new spring lock thing this weekend. But I'm not sure if it will keep the rodents off for long.

  11. My quess is he knows a good thing when he finds it. You've obviuosly provided a welcoming and fruitful environment that MJ likes. You might try playng some of Jackson's music REAL loud and see if that drives him away. Or, cut his diet way back...such easy friendly humans with great food. Why go elsewhere? (Does he try to sleep with you like a dog?)

  12. Live-trapping and reloc ating to some nice park? But more will just move in--we have a plethora of them. I don't believe in shooting them, like some people do.

  13. Got to admit he's pretty cute. And you couldn't be all that mad at him, 'cause it appears he has a peanut in paw (claw? hand?) which someone in your party must have given him...

Interesting color, too. And in his eyes you can see "rascal."

You could put a big cage on a string above one of the potted plants and rig it so that as soon as he starts digging around the cage drops and entraps him. Then sit there and start going "Nyah, nyah, nyah!" until you drive him completely insane. He'll probably head right for Fort Lauderdale!

  14. Do I take it your wife eats nuts and the birds sunflower seeds?

  16. Your remark about him preferably joining the union made my day! Looks like a creative little fellow. That kind used to drive my dog furious. Centimeters apart and a glass window between them. We had to clean the window then she was done making her point in the loudest possible way.

  17. Ha! Relocating a squirrel isn't as easy as you might think. How do I know? My hubster and I have tried it several times and I swear the squirrel returned home before we did.

The squirrel IS kinda cute. ;-)

  20. The Black Rat/Squirrel, whatever, seems like a character out of Harry Potter. Write a book about him and he'll be worth his weight in gold!
