FROM BELGRADE HE CAME (FOR BIBI)
This magnificent bird is the Pileated Woodpecker. He stands about 18 inches tall. If you are old enough to recall the song WIPE OUT by The Ventures, then you will know what his voice sounds like. The first time we heard his call, we were dumbfounded. It took most of the summer to figure out what was making the noise. Then one day, I heard the maniacal call and looking up, whamo, there he was. Right outside my bedroom window. I can now cross off another item from my bucket list. Only 797,639 to go.

lovely capture!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me of Wipe Out. I hear the beginning and the likening to the woodpecker.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite birds and I've only seen a couple of them.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot! Amazing bird, we still go on dirty pigeons and crazy gulls...
ReplyDeleteWe have one that propells himself over head cackling crazily. Neat bird!! You got a good shot. Did you ever notice how they fly? That's why I said propel--looks that way. MB
ReplyDeleteHello Friend !! This is so a nice shot !! Bird is so colorful !! THanks for sharing the beauty !!Unseen Rajasthan
ReplyDeletePlease don't do anything stupid, huh? I mean, 797 639 is depressing! Great shot, not like our woodpeckers at all.
ReplyDeleteMaybe...Can I find this song at you tube? :)
ReplyDeleteI will ask Cezar about this song, because he is the "master about music"here! :)
Beautiful red hat! This bird is adorable!
Was he visiting your garden?
Great shot my friend!

It doesnt look like the woodpeckers I see around here. Its all dolled up.
ReplyDeleteThat's a magnificent shot! Nicely done.
ReplyDelete- Pixellicious Photos
I just don't know how those birds don't get a big headache! Great snap!
ReplyDelete18 inches? Goodnight! We've got some red-headed woodpeckers...but nothing like that one. Good thing you were quick with the camera!
ReplyDeleteI've seen a very similar (it not the same) species in Costa Rica. They are so very cool!
ReplyDeleteI have heard tell that this woodpecker lives in my neighbourhood but I have yet to see one. You sure have a long bucket list...but that makes life so interesting as you cross the items off.
ReplyDeleteNice one! Good angle, too. I've been getting a lot of pictures of the back of the woodpecker's head (it'll turn just as I snap) so this one - as he's poised to start drilling - is cool to see. Haven't seen a pileated around here lately - but the downy, sapsucker, and flickers are around. Thanks for visiting my site and telling me about your woodpecker picture.
ReplyDeleteWe have the plain red-headed kind around here. But this guy is a beauty!
ReplyDeleteWow! Great shot. I still have yet to see one in the wild. Yours is the third blog that I've seen them this week, and I'm starting to feel left out! : ) Glad you finally got to see what was making such a racket.
ReplyDeleteI had one of these in my backyard earlier this year! I don't know if I have ever heard one though. That's a great shot!
ReplyDeleteLove the shot of the woodpecker. We have some really pretty bright colored ones in our area in the spring. Was nice to see what other parts of our country have.
ReplyDeleteGreat, now I have Wipeout stuck in my head. Bibi will love this!

Your bucket list! hehehe You crack me up!
ReplyDeleteCouldn't see it until I enlarged the pic and then was amazed - don't have birds like that round here - but from the sound of it tis perhaps as well.
ReplyDeleteLOL about Wipeout, and nice shot of the critters!
ReplyDeleteThis dude or one of his relatives comes to Connecticut on a regular basis. You have a wonderful picture here.
ReplyDeletea very nice looking bird and the music is now playing in my head. I have never seen a bird like this. Thanks for your comments on my website regarding the slot canyon photos. I am glad you are enjoying them.
ReplyDeleteWOW! That's SUPER, B!!! (Don't cross TOO many things off your bucket list!!--that's dangerous!)
ReplyDeleteBut this is super, very cool capture! Wish I were there too!.
Gosh, thank you! I love woodpeckers, and don't believe there are any here! I also remember very well Wipe Out!!!
ReplyDeleteLovely capture of a lovely creature! Like your commentary as well.
