THE GRANDEST OF THE GRAND

This is The Grand Hotel located on Mackinac Island. It is located on the eastern end of The Straits of Mackinac in Lake Huron between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. It opened for business on July 10, 1887. No cars or motorized vehicles are permitted on the island. The methods of transportation are horse and carriage, bicycle, and walking. The porch of the hotel is the largest in the world and has 2500 Geraniums in 260 planters. Several movies have been shot here including one of the ultimate"chic flicks" SOMEWHERE IN TIME. In keeping with the traditions of days gone by, a coat and tie is required for dinner. The grounds are meticulously maintained and breathtakingly beautiful. It has earned the honor of being one of the best hotels in the world and is on The National Registry of Historical Buildings. I will show more shots from Mackinac this week. No trip to Northern Michigan would be complete without a day trip to the Island. For the "Full Monte," book a room at The Grand Hotel. You will come back again and again. It really is that special.

  1. Will try to remember to do that if I'm ever in that part of the world. It certainly looks inviting and the view from the top floor I suppose must be quite something!

  3. Very nice photo, BS. I've never been here, but have seen other pictures of it and read its history. Sounds wonderful. We'll definitely visit if we get up that way.

Evidently you're not back in Ft. Lauderdale yet...we're heading down that way this coming weekend...but the weather is changing in Ocala...67 degrees this morning and dry air!

  4. I didn't know the name but recognized it from the movie (Ovunque nel tempo, in Italian). I like the no car idea, the building and the location.
I didn't like much the price which, for a night in October, at the cheaper rate was about 600$. But I think you get a lot for than money...

Hard to get it all in one frame of the camera, right?

  10. Wonderful that some of these elegant establishments have survived the era of motels.
